Productivity when working from home is one thing, but stress is another. Most of us are now working from home, dealing with the reality of juggling home-life with work-life, and not having a clear line between the two.
As the novelty wears off, many people are surprised by the built up stress that working from home can bring. Bupa, the private healthcare provider, reports that workplace psychologists are fully booked for virtual consultations and the health and wellbeing advice line has received 300% more calls since the start of the pandemic, according to an article in the Financial Times. While these stressors may not be the same as crowded commutes, office gossip, or the complete lack of control, they still take a toll.
Fortunately, we’ve laid out a few golden rules which can minimize the stress of working remotely.
Be compassionate ✔️
We’re living in incredibly trying times, so give yourself a break. Your productivity levels don’t have to be heightened 24/7 - there will be times when you need to sit back and regroup. Guess what? That’s ok. There will be days when the ‘bare minimum’ is all you can achieve. Guess what? That’s also ok. Give yourself the peace of mind to feel the stress, while not letting it fully consume you. Tomorrow is a new day. Onwards and upwards
Set boundaries ✔️
One of the toughest things when working from home is setting boundaries. The beloved ‘office banter’ is simply non-existent when working from home, however, taking mental breaks is hugely important to keep stress levels to a minimum. It’s very easy to over-work yourself when there’s no clear line that separates your work from personal life. Set an ideal time to ‘clock-out’ for the day and stick to it. Netflix and chill.
Stay connected ✔️
When you feel alone, it can feel next to impossible to have the energy you need to be productive. Why not create your own support network of team-mates, work from home buddies, or like-minded individuals through social media groups, planned meet-ups, or online communities? Identify individuals who share the same goals and desires as you and use their support to your advantage.
Move around ✔️
Although you may not be able to get up and leave your home as freely as you may wish (thank you, Covid), you still have the option to switch up your surroundings. Take a break from your desk and head to the kitchen table - the change of surroundings will help you focus on something different. While you’re at it, stop by the fruit bowl for some brain-fuel.
Be thankful ✔️
We get it - this is not always an easy task! Try to be aware of just how lucky you are to have a stable job in these trying times. Remind yourself why you do what you do. Think about your journey and accomplishments. In a time where unemployment rates are extremely high, you are one of the lucky ones. Convince yourself that you have a purpose, arise, and continue to make strides forward!
