Working Hard or Hardly Working?

Remote Work May 12, 2020

In the United Kingdom alone, there are around 2-million freelance workers plugging away at their computers, daily. With the amount of flexible working positions on the rise, more and more employees are keen to work from home. As glamorous as it’s made out to be, working from home can impose certain implications in terms of one’s overall health and well being. Regardless, freelancing offers numerous opportunities to keep your mind, body and soul in check. Consider these 5 ways to stay healthy while working from home.

Set a schedule (+ stick to it!) --

When you work from home, it can be tempting to wake up late and work during odd hours of the day and/or night. By setting a schedule, you will benefit your mental health as well as the overall quality of your work. Get your body into a good routine and stick to it.

Designate a workspace --

It’s important to designate a space in your home that’s solely for work -- and no, we don’t mean your bed. Your bed activities should be limited to sleep and sex. Working from bed is not only bad for your health, but can also affect your sleep patterns when the time comes to catch those z’s. Having a designated workspace will help you mentally separate work from your personal life.

Create a stress-free environment --

Working from home means you have free reign to your surroundings, so create a soothing workspace and keep your stress levels low. Start by decluttering, those stacks of paper piled about make you look not only disorganized, but also stressed out and perhaps even overwhelmed. Keep the papers in your workspace dedicated to tasks at hand.

Get up and get moving --

It can be easy to get ‘stuck’ in your seat, especially when you feel comfortable in your space. Whichever you choose to do, sit or stand, don’t do it for too long. You need to move around every hour (give or take) if you’re going to be in the same position for a long period of time. The key is to balance out the actions to keep your mind and body refreshed. Head over to the nearest park and soak in some vitamin-D.

Stock your kitchen with good food --

Ugh, the daunting temptation of chocolate digestives. Since you’re in the comfort of your own home, expect to be tempted with frequently occurring trips to the kitchen with high hopes for new snacks to magically appear. It’s fun to treat yourself every now and again, but if it starts to happen on a regular basis, then you need to take action. Stock your kitchen with nutritious snacks that provide both your mind and body with a healthy energy boost.
